When your student has a desire to learn and a thirst for knowledge but is still struggling in school there may be physical, emotional, or environmental causes. At Homeroom Education we face these challenges head on with our Observational Tutoring packages. Observational Tutoring is an 8 week package designed to root out the cause of your student’s academic struggles and ensures that our tutors are structuring each session to best address your student’s specific needs.
What makes Observational Tutoring different from our regular tutoring packages is that the sessions are observed by a behavior specialist who collects data on your student. Our behavior specialist, who has over 20 years of experience working with special needs students, analyzes how your student engages with their academics, connects to their tutor, responds to different teaching methods, and feels about school. Our highly trained behavior specialist meets with your student’s tutor every week to discuss progress and strategies to best address any deficits or difficulties your student is experiencing.
We can also customize our Observational Tutoring to compliment a 16 session tutoring package. The 16 week Observational Tutoring package would follow the same schedule as the smaller package but with double the meetings by the behavior specialist and includes collaboration with your student’s teacher. This is an ideal option for families who work with a regular tutor in 16 session intervals or who want to include their student’s school in the implementation of new teaching and learning strategies.
The reason we bringing in a behavior specialist is because our tutors are experts in the subjects they teach, but they are not trained in behavioral or cognitive science. Unlike a tutor, our behavior specialist analyzes your student’s preferences and reinforcements, uses date to differentiate between skill deficits and performance problems, and if a deficit is present they are able to help your student’s tutor create an appropriate academic plan.
Observational Tutoring Schedule
Observational Tutoring is an 8 week, intensive program, that helps families better understand why their students are struggling academically. A student will meet with their tutor every week for an hour, totaling eight sessions over the eight week program. The first two tutoring sessions will be observed by the behavior specialist. Between each session the tutor and behavior specialist will meet to discuss the student’s progress and how they are responding to new academic strategies.
After the first two sessions of observed tutoring, parents meet with the behavior specialist and tutor to discuss the initial data collected, the student’s current physical, mental, and emotional state, and the teaching methods that will be used to engage the student in the most effective way possible. All of this information will be made available to parents in an Academic Progress Report.
Over the next four tutoring sessions our tutor will be implementing the academic plan laid out by the behavior specialist. At scheduled intervals the tutor and behavior specialist will meet to discuss the student’s progress and development as well as make any changes to the academic plan that are deemed necessary.
The final two tutoring sessions in our Observational Tutoring program will, once again, be observed by the behavior specialist. These two final observations allow the Behavior Specialist to collect data on the student’s progress, track their development, and complete the Academic Progress Report with final suggestions on how to deliver the best learning environment and teaching methods for the student’s specific needs.
At the end of the final observation session, our tutor and the behavior specialist will meet with the student and their parents to discuss the Academic Progress Report. They will share the data that tracked the student’s physical, mental, and emotional state, academic progress, found deficits and the student’s growth and improvement during the eight week program. Families will be emailed a copy of the Academic Progress Report within one week of completing the Observational Tutoring program.

---|---|---|---|---|
Week 1 | Observed Session | In the first session the behavior specialist and tutor will establish an academic, physical, mental and emotional baseline for the student. This base line will then help in the tracking of the student’s progress and development. After the first session the behavior specialist and tutor will meet to discuss the initial data collected. At this time they will begin collaboration on an academic program that will be help the student to reach their educational goals. | ||
Week 2 | Observed Session | The second session provides a chance for the tutor to begin implementing suggestions from the behavior specialist. By doing so, the behavior specialist will be better able to collect observational-data on how the student handles change, suggestion, and correction. Between the second and third sessions parents meet with the behavior specialist and tutor together to discuss the collected data, their student’s current academic, physical, mental, and emotional state and the first implementations of the academic plan. | ||
Week 3 | Non Observed Session | This session will be the first chance the tutor has to independently teach the student using any strategies and/or processes agreed to in the academic plan. Now that the student is not being observed, their reaction to the academic plan will provide the tutor with a more complete picture of the student’s characteristics, personality and nature. All student interactions and reactions will be shared with the behavior specialist. | ||
Week 4 | Non Observed Session | After the fourth session, the tutor and behavior specialist will meet again to analyze the student’s academic, physical, mental, and emotional progress. At this time the behavior specialist will refine the academic plan and make any changes or suggests that they feel will benefit the student in achieving their educational goals. | ||
Week 5 | Non Observed Session | The tutor will continue teaching the student using strategies and/or processes agreed to in the academic plan. Any changes or suggestions discussed with the behavior specialist will be made. After this session the tutor will share all student interactions and reactions with the behavior specialist. | ||
Week 6 | Non Observed Session | This session will be the last non-observed session between the tutor and student. Over the previous four sessions the tutor will have used the academic plan and suggestions from the behavior specialist to customize their academic approach to help the student achieve the outlined educational goals. After this session the tutor will share all student interactions and reactions with the behavior specialist. | ||
Week 7 | Observed Session | After this session the behavior specialist will be compiling all of the date obtained from the previous seven sessions. Any changes, suggestions, or new methods the behavior specialist wants to introduce will be discussed with the tutor. Between the seventh and eighth session the tutor and behavior specialist will meet and finalize the academic plan to be followed once Observational Tutoring has been completed. | ||
Week 8 | Observed Session | The last session provides a chance for the tutor and behavior specialist to review the techniques and methods used in the academic plan with the student. This session’s focus will be on ensuring that the student feels better prepared to handle their academic challenges and has clear educational goals established. At the end of the session the behavior specialist and tutor will review the academic plan with the student and parent. During this meeting the behavior specialist will discuss their findings, the student’s progress and suggestions for addressing any deficits. The tutor will then explain how these suggestions will be practiced in all future Homeroom Education tutoring sessions. |
